The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has released the official timetable for the 2026 Commonwealth Games Trials, with athletes set to compete for places on Team Nigeria during a three-day event scheduled for June 20–22, 2026.
It was disclosed in a press release signed by Maxwell Kumoye, Chairman, Media Committee, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN)
The trials will feature some of Nigeria’s leading track and field athletes and will serve as the selection event for the nation’s representatives at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
A comprehensive programme of sprint, middle-distance, long-distance, race-walking, and field events has been scheduled across the three days of competition.
The opening day, June 20, will commence with the women’s 5,000m final and the men’s discus final, followed by the first-round heats of the men’s and women’s 100m events. The day will also feature the men’s high jump final and the opening heats of the men’s and women’s 400m races.
During the afternoon session, attention will shift to the women’s long jump and shot put finals, alongside the men’s and women’s 800m finals. The women’s 100m heats, men’s triple jump final, and men’s 5,000m final are also scheduled.
Day Two, June 21, will see race walkers compete in the men’s and women’s 10,000m events. Field event athletes will contest the women’s javelin, women’s triple jump, and men’s and women’s hammer throw finals.
Track events on the second day include the heats of the men’s and women’s 400m hurdles, followed by the much-anticipated semi-finals of the men’s and women’s 100m and 400m events in the afternoon. The day will conclude with the men’s and women’s 100m finals, expected to be among the highlights of the championships.
The final day, June 22, will begin with heats in the men’s 110m hurdles, women’s 100m hurdles, and the men’s and women’s 200m events.
The concluding afternoon session promises an exciting finish, featuring finals in the men’s and women’s 400m hurdles, men’s javelin, women’s high jump, men’s and women’s 1,500m, women’s discus, and the men’s and women’s 400m.
The competition will culminate with the finals of the men’s and women’s sprint hurdles and 200m events, where athletes will make their final push to secure qualification and selection for the Commonwealth Games.
