The Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has commended the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for approving the payment of a 13th-month salary to public servants in the state, describing the decision as a landmark demonstration of his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare.
In a statement jointly signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, and Acting Secretary, Comrade Josephine Omodior, the union said the governor’s approval reflects a leadership style that recognises public servants as critical partners in the delivery of good governance and sustainable development.
The council particularly praised Governor Oborevwori for approving the payment of a full month’s salary as the 13th-month package, rather than the basic salary option adopted in some states.
According to the NUJ, the gesture underscores the administration’s genuine concern for the economic well-being of workers and their families.
The union noted that beyond its immediate financial value, the initiative would provide significant socio-economic benefits by easing the financial burden often experienced by workers after the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
It added that the additional salary would enable workers to meet family obligations, settle financial commitments, and resume work with renewed confidence and enthusiasm.
The NUJ further stated that the welfare package would boost workers’ morale, improve their purchasing power, stimulate economic activities across Delta State, and strengthen the cordial relationship between the government and organised labour. It expressed confidence that a more motivated workforce would translate into improved productivity and enhanced service delivery across the public service.
Describing the initiative as consistent with Governor Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E. Agenda, the council urged local government councils in the state to emulate the governor by extending similar welfare packages to workers under their employment, thereby promoting inclusiveness and boosting morale at the grassroots.
The journalists’ union expressed profound appreciation to the governor for what it described as an exemplary act of leadership and compassion, noting that the unprecedented gesture would inspire greater dedication, loyalty, and excellence among public servants while reinforcing Delta State’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most worker-friendly states.
The union also prayed for wisdom, good health, and continued success for Governor Oborevwori as he continues to lead the affairs of the state.
