The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a fresh warning that it may embark on an indefinite strike across 11 state-owned universities if the affected state governments fail to implement the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU Agreement before the end of July 2026.
The warning was delivered by the union’s Benin and Yola Zones during separate press conferences held on Monday. ASUU accused the governments of Edo, Delta, Ondo, Adamawa, Borno, Taraba, and Yobe states of failing to implement the agreement six months after it was signed.
Speaking at the briefing, the Benin Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Monday Igbafen, disclosed that ASUU branches in the affected institutions have already begun mobilising members for a total shutdown of academic activities if the outstanding issues remain unresolved.
The universities affected include:
Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma
Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko
Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa
Delta State University, Abraka
University of Delta, Agbor
Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba
Southern Delta University, Ozoro
Adamawa State University, Mubi
Borno State University, Maiduguri
Taraba State University, Jalingo
Yobe State University, Damaturu
According to ASUU, while the Federal Government and several state governments have implemented the 2025 agreement, the affected states are yet to pay the Consolidated Academic and Technologists Allowance (CATA), other approved allowances, and arrears dating back to January 2026.
Also speaking, ASUU Yola Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Dani Mamman, described the continued delay as a violation of collective bargaining agreements and warned that the failure to honour the agreement has heightened tension across the affected institutions.
He stressed that lecturers are only demanding their legitimate entitlements and urged the affected governors to immediately implement the agreement and clear all outstanding arrears to prevent a disruption of academic activities.
If no action is taken before the end of July, students in the affected universities may face another round of prolonged academic interruptions as ASUU prepares for an indefinite industrial action.
