The President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Isaiah Benjamin, has commended Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for the ongoing renovation and upgrade of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, describing the project as a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to sports development and youth empowerment.
Benjamin gave the commendation during an unscheduled visit to inspect the level of work at the iconic sports facility.
He noted that the rehabilitation of the stadium has renewed hope among athletes, coaches, sports administrators and football enthusiasts that Kaduna State is on course to reclaiming its status as one of Nigeria’s foremost sporting hubs.
According to him, the quality of work at the stadium reflects Governor Sani’s determination to provide world-class sporting infrastructure capable of hosting national and international competitions while creating opportunities for talent discovery and development.
He recalled that the Ahmadu Bello Stadium has, for decades, remained one of Nigeria’s most historic sporting venues, producing athletes who have represented the country with distinction on the global stage.
Benjamin said the ongoing upgrade would not only restore the stadium to its former glory but also stimulate economic activities through sports tourism, generate employment opportunities and encourage greater youth participation in productive ventures.
He added that the governor’s investment in sports infrastructure aligns with the Federal Government’s drive to reposition sports as a catalyst for economic growth, national unity and youth development.
“The ongoing work at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium is highly commendable. It is evident that Governor Uba Sani is committed to restoring the lost glory of sports in Kaduna State. The quality of work we have seen speaks volumes about the seriousness attached to the project.
“Sports remains one of the strongest platforms for youth engagement, peacebuilding and economic empowerment. By investing in modern sporting facilities, the governor is investing in the future of thousands of young people across Kaduna State.
“We sincerely appreciate His Excellency for giving sports the attention it deserves. This project will inspire athletes and provide opportunities for discovering new talents who will represent Kaduna State and Nigeria at higher levels.”
The SWAN President urged Governor Sani to sustain the momentum by continuing investments in sports infrastructure, athlete development and grassroots competitions to consolidate the gains already being recorded across the state.
He also called for increased support for sports associations, schools and community-based competitions as part of efforts to build a sustainable sports ecosystem capable of producing future champions.
According to him, sustained investment in sports will complement the administration’s achievements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, security and youth empowerment.
Benjamin expressed confidence that upon completion, the upgraded Ahmadu Bello Stadium would once again host major national sporting events, football competitions and athletics championships, further strengthening Kaduna State’s reputation as a centre of sporting excellence.
He equally appealed to stakeholders in the sports sector, corporate organisations and development partners to support the Kaduna State Government’s vision of revitalising sports and empowering young talents.
The SWAN President reaffirmed the association’s commitment to promoting initiatives that advance sports development and pledged continued partnership with the government in showcasing programmes that contribute to the growth of sports in Kaduna State and across Nigeria.
He added that Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to sports development would leave a lasting legacy and urged the administration to sustain the pace of ongoing projects for the benefit of future generations.
