Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Guwor Emomotimi Dennis, has urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to shun violence and bitterness ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Guwor made the call on Wednesday as the Assembly resumed plenary after its annual recess, urging political actors to make the elections about ideas, programmes, competence, character and service.
He noted that campaigns for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections began on August 19, while campaigns for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled to commence on September 9.
“As politicians and public servants, we have a special responsibility to ensure that the electoral season does not become a season of bitterness, violence and division,” he said.
The Speaker stressed that elections should not be treated as a do-or-die affair, appealing to all stakeholders to conduct their campaigns peacefully and responsibly.
Guwor also congratulated the government and people of Delta State on the 35th anniversary of the state’s creation, which was marked during the Assembly’s recess.
He commended Governor Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori and his administration for hosting the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit, describing it as a strategic platform for showcasing investment opportunities and attracting domestic and international investors.
He assured that the Assembly would continue to provide legislative support for policies aimed at promoting investment, enterprise and economic development.
The Speaker further described the increase in Delta’s State Constituencies from 29 to 38 as a historic development, saying the creation of nine additional constituencies would give more communities direct representation in the legislature.
“Representation is at the heart of democracy,” he said, adding that the development would provide more communities with a voice in the democratic process.
Guwor charged lawmakers to return to legislative duties with renewed vigour, urging committee chairmen and members to expedite action on pending Bills, Motions and Petitions.
He also challenged members to apply the knowledge gained from their leadership training at the London Business School to improve their legislative performance.
He expressed gratitude to God for His protection over members and their families during the recess and welcomed lawmakers back to plenary.
