Delta NUJ Set for Solar Power Upgrade…Governor Oborevwori Commended for Media-Friendly Intervention

The Delta State Government is set to install a solar power system at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council Secretariat.

The initiative is in line with the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, with focus on inclusive governance, institutional development and the provision of infrastructure that supports effective service delivery.

The proposed solar installation follows the state government’s recent donation of a bus to the NUJ Delta State Council, further underscoring the administration’s support for the media and its role in society.

As part of the process, an Assistant Director of Engineering in the Ministry of Energy, Mr. Eddy Ebruke, led an engineering team to the NUJ Press Centre on Thursday to assess the facility and determine the technical requirements for the proposed solar power system.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the NUJ Delta State Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the intervention, describing it as a welcome and practical demonstration of the administration’s support for the media.

Oyowe said the solar power project would reduce the Centre’s dependence on conventional electricity and provide a more stable power supply for journalists and other media practitioners using the facility.

According to him, reliable electricity is essential to the effective operation of the media, particularly at a time when journalism increasingly depends on digital technology, internet connectivity and other power-driven communication tools.

He expressed appreciation to the governor for the intervention, describing it as a “well-done job,” and noted that investment in sustainable infrastructure would contribute significantly to creating a more conducive environment for journalists to work and serve the public.

The proposed solar installation is expected to go beyond providing an alternative source of electricity, as it represents an investment in the sustainability of media operations and the welfare of journalists in Delta State.

“For the Delta NUJ, the intervention underscores the importance of providing journalists with a functional and conducive working environment while strengthening the capacity of the media to effectively inform, educate and hold society accountable,” Oyowe said.

Chairman of the NUJ Delta State Council also said, “The project when completed is expected to provide a more dependable power supply at the NUJ Centre and further enhance its role as a hub for professional journalism, media engagement and public discourse in Delta State”.
