Caligeo Suites Offers Free Accommodation to Team Nigeria Commonwealth Games Medalists

As Team Nigeria intensifies preparations for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, athletes have received a morale boost following the unveiling of a special reward package by Caligeo Suites Ibadan for medal winners.

The initiative, announced by the Chief Executive Officer of Caligeo Suites, Mr. Gbolahan Fatuga, is aimed at motivating Nigerian athletes to achieve podium finishes while encouraging greater private sector participation in sports development.

According to Fatuga, the hospitality firm’s incentive is intended to serve as a model for businesses seeking to complement government efforts in supporting Nigerian athletes.

“To foster corporate sponsorship and support for our athletes within the Nigerian business community, I propose this initiative, with Caligeo Suites serving as a benchmark for other organizations and individuals,” he said.

Under the reward scheme, Team Nigeria athletes who win medals at the Commonwealth Games will receive accommodation vouchers redeemable at Caligeo Suites, Ibadan.

Gold medalists will receive vouchers for 30 nights’ accommodation, silver medalists will get 20 nights, while bronze medalists will be entitled to 15 nights in the hotel’s standard suites.

The vouchers, subject to room availability, will remain valid until December 31, 2027.

Fatuga, a former athlete, explained that the vouchers are transferable in recognition of the support provided by coaches, friends and family members throughout an athlete’s career.

“Since some of the medalists may live outside the country and may not be able to capitalize directly on this incentive, I would like to emphasize that the vouchers are transferable to their coaches, friends and family who contributed to their success and are more likely to visit Ibadan,” he said.

He stressed that sustainable sports development requires stronger collaboration between government and the private sector, noting that sports federations and public institutions cannot shoulder the responsibility alone.

“Supporting athletes who represent Nigeria necessitates a collaborative effort between businesses and governmental bodies. Sole reliance on the government and sports federations is not a sustainable strategy. Corporations have the opportunity to develop creative and innovative approaches to incentivize and support our athletes,” he added.

The incentive applies only to Team Nigeria athletes who win medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and does not cover participants at the recent national trials.

The initiative is expected to further motivate Team Nigeria athletes as they target podium finishes while highlighting the increasing role of corporate support in the development of sports in Nigeria.
