Delta Sports Commission Chair Meets Team Nigeria Athletes in Scotland
The Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission (DSC), Onoriode Oborevwori, has met with Delta-born athletes representing Nigeria at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Scotland, commending their performances and encouraging them to sustain their momentum.
Speaking during the interaction, Oborevwori praised the athletes for their dedication and discipline, noting that their early performances were commendable. “You have shown great determination and pride representing Delta State and Nigeria. Your performance so far is impressive, and we are confident you will achieve even greater success,” he said.
He further urged the athletes to remain focused and resilient as the competition progresses. “Stay committed, remain disciplined, and keep pushing your limits. The entire state is proud of you and firmly behind you,” he added.
The DSC Chairman also reiterated the unwavering commitment of Sheriff Oborevwori to sports development in the state. According to him, “Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is deeply committed to sports development. His administration will continue to invest in facilities, training, and athlete welfare to ensure Delta remains a powerhouse in Nigerian sports.”
He assured the athletes of continued support from the state government, stressing that sports remain a vital tool for youth empowerment and global recognition. “We will continue to create opportunities for our athletes to thrive and compete at the highest level. Delta State will not relent in its efforts to build champions,” he concluded.
The Chairman’s meeting with Delta-born athletes at the Commonwealth Games appears more like a PR effort than a reflection of real progress in sports administration in Delta State. While supporting athletes abroad is important, true leadership must begin at home.
The current leadership of the Delta State Sports Commission under Hon. Onoriode Joshua Oborevwori has, in my view, been deeply underwhelming. Leadership is not defined by public appearances but by how well those who work behind the scenes are treated.
There are growing concerns that many officials are not treated with adequate respect or empathy, with reports of withheld entitlements affecting morale and productivity. Such practices undermine motivation and excellence.
No sports system thrives on division. Delta’s historic success in Nigerian sports was built on unity, respect, and shared purpose—values that must be preserved.
Before motivating athletes abroad, leadership must first inspire confidence among staff at home. Every official is a stakeholder in the mission of sports development, and when people feel valued and fairly treated, performance improves.
Delta State has the talent and legacy to remain Nigeria’s sporting leader, but this can only be sustained through fairness, transparency, inclusiveness, and genuine care for all contributors—not just public relations gestures.
