Nigeria’s movie industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood icon, Sir Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs.
The legendary actor died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the age of 84.
His death was confirmed in a statement released by his family and signed by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, with veteran actress and his wife, Joke Silva, also associated with the family announcement. Describing him as “The Lion of Lufodo,” the family said it was announcing his passing with gratitude to God for a life well lived.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle,” the family stated.
The statement gave his full name as Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (MFR), July 11, 1942 – September 16, 2026.
The family also appealed to bloggers, media organisations and members of the public to respect their privacy as they mourn the veteran actor.
Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most celebrated theatre, television and film actors, with a career spanning more than five decades.
He trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and began his professional acting career in the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria, where he established himself as one of the most prominent figures in the country’s theatre and film industry.
Over the years, Jacobs became a household name through his remarkable performances on stage, television and in Nollywood productions, earning widespread recognition for his contribution to the growth of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
His death comes after years of false reports about his passing, which were repeatedly debunked by his family. One of the most recent such reports surfaced in June 2024.
The veteran actor celebrated his 84th birthday on July 11, 2026, just two months before his death.
He is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, children and grandchildren.
Burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family at a later date.
The Nigerian film and theatre community is expected to pay tribute to the late actor, whose career and influence spanned generations.
