President Tinubu Orders EFCC to Vacate Court Order Freezing Osun Government Accounts

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately take steps to vacate a court order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government.

In a State House statement issued on Thursday, the President expressed concern over the timing of the EFCC’s action, noting that although he respects the agency’s constitutional independence, the development, coming just days before the Osun State governorship election, could create the impression of federal interference in the electoral process.

President Tinubu stated that while he was not informed beforehand of the EFCC’s decision to obtain the court order on August 5, 2026, he remained committed to allowing anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies to carry out their statutory responsibilities independently, professionally, and without political interference.

He reiterated that since assuming office, he has deliberately refrained from directing the operational activities of the EFCC and other investigative agencies because strong democratic institutions are essential to good governance and the rule of law.

The President, however, said the timing of the action was “inauspicious” and could undermine public confidence in the credibility and fairness of the forthcoming Osun governorship election.

“In the overriding public interest of preserving public confidence and the integrity, credibility and fairness of our democratic process, I have directed the EFCC to immediately proceed to the court to vacate the order and discontinue whatever action it has instituted against the Osun State Government in this regard,” the statement read.

The President concluded by reaffirming his commitment to democratic principles and the independence of public institutions while emphasizing the need to avoid actions that could be perceived as influencing the electoral process.
