The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has unveiled its contingent for the African Region 2 Athletics Championship scheduled to take place in Senegal, with a talented mix of U-18 and U-20 athletes set to represent the country.
The team comprises promising young athletes who will compete in sprint, middle-distance, hurdles, relay, and field events, as the federation aims for a strong outing at the regional championship.
In the U-18 girls category, Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo and Tejiri Ugoh Praise will compete in the 100m, 200m, and relay events, while Jecinta Andrews and Faith Ezechukwu will feature in the 400m and relay. Mary Chioma Edeh will contest the 800m, 400m hurdles, and relay.
For the U-18 boys, Bright Gift will participate in the 100m, 200m, and relay events. Mumuni Abdul Mohammed and David Udoh Dominion will compete in the 400m and relay, while Success Okereke will represent the team in the Discus Throw and Shot Put.
In the U-20 girls category, Miracle Oluebube Ezechukwu and Lucy Chiamaka Nwankwo will compete in the 100m, 200m, and relay events. Tejiri Godwin will also feature in the 100m and 200m. Gang James will represent the team in the 1500m and 5000m events, while Emmanuel Shakamomodu Audu will compete in the Shot Put and Discus Throw.
The officials accompanying the team include Olu Sule, Abdulhakeem Idris, Kate Areguamen, team physiotherapist Ruth Fabian Nkoteto, and Secretary Taldang Tanimu.
The team is expected to depart for Senegal on July 2 or 3 as preparations intensify for the championship. Expectations are high that the AFN contingent will make a strong statement and further showcase the immense potential of Nigeria’s next generation of athletics stars on the continental stage.
