Nigeria’s men and women chess teams return to action today (Sunday) in Round Five of the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad, with both sides seeking crucial victories as the tournament enters a more demanding phase.
The Nigerian women, who have accumulated five match points from the opening four rounds, face the Czech Republic, also on five match points, while the men, with four match points, take on Malawi at the ongoing Olympiad in Samarkand.
Both matches are scheduled for 3 p.m. Nigerian time in Samarkand.
Nigeria’s women have so far recorded two victories, one draw and one defeat, producing some of the country’s strongest individual performances at the competition.
Michelle Chiamaka Nwankwo has been the standout performer, scoring 3½ points from four games. She remains unbeaten, having recorded three wins and a draw.
Sandra Osarugue Omoruyi has also impressed, contributing three points from four games, while Deborah Ebimobo-ere Quickpen has added two points.
The women began their campaign in emphatic fashion with a 4-0 victory over Mali before suffering a 3½-½ defeat to England in Round Two.
They subsequently held Mozambique to a 2-2 draw before responding with a convincing 3-1 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in Round Four.
The result against Trinidad and Tobago provided a timely boost ahead of their Round Five encounter with the Czech Republic.
The Nigerian men, meanwhile, have experienced a more mixed campaign but have demonstrated their ability to recover from setbacks.
They opened with a commanding 4-0 victory over New Caledonia before losing 3½-½ to Kazakhstan in Round Two.
The team bounced back in Round Three with a narrow 2½-1½ victory over Saudi Arabia, only to suffer another setback in Round Four, losing 3-1 to Cuba.
Odion Aikhoje and Odey Goodness Ekunke have been among the leading performers for the men, with both players on 2½ points after four rounds.
The victory over Saudi Arabia was particularly important for the Nigerian side as they look to maintain momentum and climb the standings.
Their opening-round 4-0 victory over New Caledonia also underlined the team’s ability to maximise opportunities against favourable opposition.
The Round Five clash with Malawi presents another opportunity for the Nigerian men to return to winning ways.
Both Nigeria and Malawi have four match points after four rounds, with Nigeria currently placed ahead of Malawi in the tournament standings.
For the women, the challenge against the Czech Republic represents another significant test after their strong start to the competition.
With seven rounds still to be played, both Nigerian teams remain firmly in the contest and will be hoping that individual consistency can translate into important team victories.
Nwankwo’s unbeaten run and Omoruyi’s contribution have provided encouragement for the women, while Aikhoje, Ekunke and their teammates will be looking to reproduce the collective strength that earned Nigeria victories in the opening and third rounds.
As the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad progresses, Round Five offers both Nigerian teams another opportunity to strengthen their positions and build momentum for the remaining rounds.
