Delta TUC Demands Probe Into Death of Education Ministry Assistant Director

By Our Correspondent

The Delta State Council of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of an Assistant Director in the state Ministry of Education.

The union made the call following reports of an alleged incident involving the deceased and a serving Commissioner in the Delta State Government.

In a statement signed by its State Chairman, Comrade Wilson Asekutu, the TUC expressed sadness over the death and commiserated with the deceased’s family, colleagues, friends and associates.

The labour union said reports of an alleged physical altercation preceding the death had raised concerns among workers, stressing the need for the circumstances surrounding the incident to be properly established.

It, however, appealed to its members and the general public to remain calm and refrain from violence, confrontation and the circulation of unverified information while relevant authorities investigate the matter.

The TUC said it would engage with relevant government authorities and other stakeholders to seek clarification on the circumstances surrounding the death.

It said the investigation should, where relevant, examine witness accounts, medical records, documentary evidence and other materials that could assist in establishing what transpired.

The labour body also cautioned individuals connected with the matter against making statements or taking actions capable of prejudicing the investigative process, interfering with witnesses or heightening tensions.

It stressed that allegations should be properly investigated and that anyone found culpable should be dealt with in accordance with due process and the law.

The TUC further assured workers in the Ministry of Education, particularly the deceased’s colleagues, that it was monitoring developments and would pursue lawful avenues to ensure that the concerns of its members were adequately represented.

The union said its appeal for calm should not be interpreted as indifference to the circumstances surrounding the death.

According to the TUC, the deceased’s family deserves answers, while workers are entitled to a safe and dignified working environment.

The union therefore urged the Delta State Government and other relevant authorities to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves and ensure that the circumstances surrounding the death are thoroughly and credibly investigated and called for appropriate action based on the findings of the competent authorities.

The TUC also reiterated its commitment to pursuing justice and accountability through lawful and legitimate means.
