…Police launch homicide probe, hunt two others
The Delta State Police Command has arrested one of three persons allegedly linked to the death of a Deputy Director in the State Ministry of Secondary Education, Mr Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda.
Adeda reportedly died following an incident at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu, in Asaba.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Delta State, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest on Sunday, saying the command received a complaint alleging that the deceased was beaten by three aides to the commissioner during the incident.
Edafe identified the alleged suspects as Enos Attah, Oputa Okestine and Lucky Adoh.
He said Adoh had been arrested, while the police were making efforts to apprehend Attah and Okestine.
The police spokesman said the Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, had directed the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Adeda’s death.
According to Edafe, investigators would examine all available evidence, including video recordings, eyewitness accounts and medical records, in an effort to establish the sequence of events that led to the deputy director’s death.
He said the investigation would not be limited to the three alleged suspects, as the police would examine the actions of everyone connected with the incident and determine whether any person was culpable.
Erale assured the deceased’s family and members of the public that anyone found culpable would face prosecution in accordance with the law, regardless of the person’s status or position.
The commissioner also appealed for calm, urging members of the public not to reach conclusions before the investigation is concluded.
He commiserated with Adeda’s family and pledged that the investigation would be conducted professionally and without interference.
